Lung infection is a major health problem, and pneumonia and related lung infections are one of the major causes of death. The application of bronchoscopy technology has made great progress in the diagnosis and treatment of lung diseases, and has become an indispensable and important means for clinical diagnosis and treatment of lung diseases.
For some patients with severe pulmonary infections and ventilator-associated pneumonia, including those with immune deficiency and pulmonary infections, empirical anti-infective treatment is not effective, with a low sputum culture positive rate and poor specificity, which make it difficult to achieve "precise" and "timely" anti-infective treatment.
In contrast, the bacterial culture of the secretion, protective brush examination and alveolar lavage fluid collected by bronchoscopy under sterile operation has high sensitivity and specificity, and has a strong guiding role for the application of clinical anti-infective drugs.

Targeted drugs based on clinical etiological examination can significantly improve the efficacy, avoid antibiotic abuse, reduce the emergence of drug-resistant bacteria, and save medical resources.
Bronchoscopy can enter the lower respiratory tract of patients, and can generally reach the subsegmental bronchial opening to suction sputum, remove sputum plugs and sputum crusts. It can even provide local saline or drug lavage therapy, combined with back-patting to dislodge sputum to achieve lung recruitment.
Moreover, there is also the rescue of drowning patients, which can be achieved by fully suctioning out the water and secretions in the bronchial tube through bronchoscopy while completing endotracheal intubation, quickly alleviating the patient's symptoms.
Among severe patients, long-term intubation patients may experience granulation tissue hyperplasia due to repeated friction of the intubation distal end on the airway inner membrane, partially blocking the airway and causing dyspnea; or patients with previous tracheal intubation and scar-prone skin may experience balloon compression of part of the mucosa, resulting in airway obstruction and severe cases may even lead to asphyxia; the more common cause of benign airway stenosis in China is tuberculosis of the bronchial inner membrane. Bronchoscopy can confirm or rule out this diagnosis.
